Another name for pre-diabetes could be stage 1 of type 2 diabetes, syndrome X stage 2, and full blown type 2, stage 3. Many disease have stages and it helps people to understand the complications that arise as the disease progresses. It also shows them their options and their chance of survival.

One of the marvelous aspects of type 2 diabetes is that no matter which stage you are at, the treatment is in your hands. Not like cancer, for example, where patients have little choice but to rely on the medical profession entirely ... have to endure chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and/or surgery. And then they may not survive.

The treatment for type 2, with or without medications, is a healthy eating plan ... and isn't that so simple? Imagine being able to control this condition simply by finding a diet that will work for you and then being able to eat your way to good health!

The food you eat needs to help you:

  • lose weight
  • maintain low blood sugar levels
  • improve your cardiovascular risk by reducing your triglyceride level, and raising your HDL level

It is also important to know:

  • the ideal carbohydrates to eat, eg. those based on foods with a low glycemic index (low-GI)
  • the proportion of carbohydrates, protein and fats to eat

Of course, everyone is different, we all have our likes and dislikes. But the idea is to find an eating plan that you will keep as a lifetime partner, not one you will divorce in the not too distant future.

A low-GI diet is the single most effective way to:

  • reduce your blood sugar level and your insulin level, almost immediately
  • reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates and your need for insulin either from your body or by injection
  • stabilize your weight
  • then begin to lower your weight
  • lower your blood fats

The ideal way is to find an Accredited Practicing Dietitian who works in the area of diabetes management. An alternative is to follow a low-GI carbohydrate food plan yourself with the help of one of the many handbooks available.

The beauty of a low-GI diet is that your body will respond immediately; your blood sugar levels will be lower. You will need less insulin and as this hormone controls fat deposition in your body, it helps you with fat loss especially around your abdominal area.

No matter what you do with the treatment for your type 2 diabetes, your eating plan is the controlling factor.
